About OptiCare
Eye care that comes to you
We built OptiCare because millions of people skip eye care every year — not because they don't care, but because getting to a doctor is hard. We're changing that.
Our mission
Accessible eye care for everyone
One in four Americans lives more than 30 miles from the nearest eye doctor. For people in rural areas, those without transportation, or anyone juggling a busy schedule, a routine eye exam can feel out of reach.
OptiCare combines a clinically validated at-home vision screening with real, licensed optometrists who review your results and issue prescriptions — all from your phone or computer, in under an hour.
The process
From screen to prescription in three steps
Take the at-home eye exam
Our guided 7-step vision screening tests visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, astigmatism, and near vision using your device's screen. No special equipment needed — just a well-lit room and 10 minutes.
Connect with a licensed optometrist
A board-certified optometrist reviews your screening results and discusses your vision history. Choose a live video consultation ($49) or an async message review ($29) — whichever fits your schedule.
Receive your prescription
Your doctor issues a valid, legally recognized prescription within 24 hours. It's saved to your OptiCare account and can be used to order glasses or contacts directly through our shop — or taken anywhere.
The science
A clinically validated screening
Our exam protocol was developed with optometrists and validated against in-office testing. Here's what each step measures and why it matters.
Screen calibration
We measure your screen's pixel density and set a known viewing distance so all subsequent tests are physically accurate.
Visual acuity — right eye
Snellen-style letter recognition at a calibrated distance gives us your baseline distance vision for the right eye.
Visual acuity — left eye
The same test repeated for the left eye, tested independently to catch asymmetric refractive error.
Contrast sensitivity
Fading letter contrast detects early changes in visual quality that standard acuity tests can miss — important for driving and low-light vision.
Astigmatism check
A radial line pattern identifies whether the cornea or lens has irregular curvature, which causes blurring at all distances.
Near vision
Reading-distance text checks for presbyopia and near-vision difficulty, common after age 40.
Our doctor network
Real doctors, real credentials
Every optometrist on the OptiCare platform is independently verified before they see a single patient.
State licensure verified
We confirm active licensure in every state where a doctor practices through the state optometry board.
Board certification required
All doctors hold certification from the National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NBEO).
Continuing education current
We verify that CE credits are up to date so doctors stay current with evolving clinical standards.
Malpractice coverage confirmed
Every doctor carries active malpractice insurance, protecting both patients and practitioners.
Compliance & privacy
Built to the highest standards
Telehealth eye care is regulated at both the federal and state level. We take compliance seriously — not as a checkbox, but as a foundation.
HIPAA compliance
All patient data — exam results, prescriptions, consultation notes — is stored and transmitted in full compliance with HIPAA. Data is encrypted at rest and in transit.
State telehealth laws
Telehealth prescribing laws vary by state. OptiCare operates only in states where our exam protocol meets or exceeds the legal standard for remote prescribing. We currently serve 48 states.
FDA-recognized screening
Our vision screening protocol follows FDA guidance for software-based medical devices. We do not claim to replace a comprehensive in-office eye health exam — we provide a validated refractive screening.
Prescription validity
Prescriptions issued through OptiCare are legally valid and accepted by optical retailers nationwide, including our own shop, LensCrafters, Warby Parker, and independent opticians.
